Introduction

William Lindemann is a Traverse City, Michigan-based artist whose mixed-media abstract paintings develop through a process grounded in intuition, memory, and close observation of both natural and built environments. His practice begins with sketches created during quiet, contemplative moments, which gradually develop into compositions before moving to the studio. Working primarily with acrylic on primed paper mounted to a rigid surface, Lindemann builds layered paintings through color, texture, repeated revisions, sanding, scraping, and other surface techniques.

His work incorporates recurring imagery drawn from everyday experience, including houses, bridges, ladders, boats, oars, ropes, wheels, cosmic forms, landscapes, waterscapes, hands, faces, and figures. Alongside painting, he also creates mixed-media sculpture.

Lindemann is currently seeking broader regional visibility to expand opportunities for exhibitions and connections with curators throughout the Great Lakes region. He identifies current global events, environmental conditions, and the relationship between natural and cultural systems as subjects that inform the narratives present in his work. An upcoming project includes participation in ArtPrize Grand Rapids 2026.

Interview

What’s something you’ve been noticing lately that’s influencing your work?

Critical global news issues and the effects on people really grab my attention. The circumstances of survival in the face of famine, drought, extreme weather, human greed and aggression informs the narratives that run through my subconscious, which then informs the work. Often these narratives manifest in unusual and unpredictable ways. Additionally the interrelationships between natural and cultural systems have always provided another focus for me. I refer to this as the sense of place in my work. These narratives that I consider while working are not necessarily linear, so that each viewer may have a different interpretation of the piece and of my title.

Is there a piece, project, or idea you keep returning to lately?

In the studio I am exploring common symbols with various possible meanings, garnered from everyday experience. Abstracted images of houses, bridges, ladders, boats, oars, ropes, wheels and whorling cosmic bodies, which may be juxtaposed against chaotic gestural waterscapes or landscapes. Often figurative elements are included as well: hands, faces, figures in action. The paintings are developed in swirling layers of bold, translucent colors.

Has living in or around the Great Lakes region shaped your work in any way?

The single most meaningful change that occurred within my work I directly attribute to living and working in the Grand Traverse region of Northwestern Michigan. I moved here from a natural setting in the Northern Sierra Nevada Mountains of California near Lake Tahoe where we lived for more than 30 years. I am a Midwestern native from the West Shore of Lake Michigan and being near the forested lake shore feels like home. I don’t paint the place I’m in, I paint from the place I’m in.

Artists Statement

Painting begins long before I enter the studio. It begins with paying attention.

Ideas often emerge while I’m out walking or sketching. By the time I begin painting, I’m carrying impressions rather than plans. I don’t work from fixed images. Each painting unfolds through intuition as I build and rework layers of acrylic paint until the work begins to reveal itself.

Although abstract, my paintings are rooted in experience. Memory, dreams, the landscape, and the relationship between people and the natural and cultural world all find their way into the work. Rather than telling a fixed story, I invite viewers to discover their own.

Over time, I’ve come to realize that painting has taught me more than how to make art; it has taught me how to pay attention. Each work is an invitation to share the process of discovery.
